Project Poster

Above is our project research document which contains all of our documentation and our poster which outlines our project.

While a large percentage of greenhouse gasses emitted are produced in the power industry, yet many countries are placing more and more emphasis on renewable sources of energy. In these modernized places, much of the fossil fuel emissions come from at points of varying power demand ( nighttime versus daytime - summertime versus winter ). This is because with renewable power plants ( wind farms, solar panels, geothermal wells ), it is difficult and sometimes impossible to control the amount of electricity produced. In our project STEG, we attempt to solve this problem by designing and testing a new water pump to be implemented in a geothermal system in order to allow it to be used at these points of varying power demand.

The left photo shows the the virtual model of the iris model. Tall slanted blades make up the interior that water will flow through. They run along a sliding track on the bottom plate and a curved track on the top plate. When the top plate is rotated ( with a gear ) the blades are pushed along the track. This constriction creates the pumping displacement of water.

The right photo depicts the final progress of the solution. It shows a wooden frame and some PVC piping. This would have created a piping and a frame for the pump to fit into and be tested with running water. However, this was not able to happen as the construction of the compression unit through 3D printing faced many physical issues
